 Have you ever gone to a Big Box store thinking you’re going to get a great deal? Sure, you probably have. I have…for a bathroom project. Being fairly conservative in nature and having a healthy fear and dislike of debt, the one thing I really desired was a spa tub/shower combination: a quiet refuge for the wear and tear my body takes from my chosen profession. 

     My naive theory was that a big box store would have what I wanted at a price that couldn’t be even remotely close in cost at a smaller local supplier. I sought out a seemingly knowledgeable bath department employee and explained what I wanted, complete with a sealed plan of my new bathroom, in hand. He came up with a solution of a “garden tub.”  They did not have one in stock. It would be two weeks before one was shipped in. Trusting in the salesperson’s expertise and the seemingly decent price of $500.00 for a spa tub, it seemed like a good fit for what I was looking for. Besides, it was a “garden” tub, right down my alley. After two weeks of waiting (and sharing one bathroom with three daughters) I was more than eager to make the fairly lengthy trip to pick up the center piece for my refuge! 

     When I finally got there and took a look at my “special order”, I’ll never forget the sinking feeling I had that soon turned to utter disgust and frustration. For those of you who know me, you can verify that I’m not exactly a little guy. Please pardon me if this is politically incorrect, but “Mini-Me” would have had a hard time fitting in there with “Twiggy”. With contractors lined up and time running short to my spring season, I disgustedly left with a standard tub and shower unit-no jets for an aching back. 

     The lesson I learned from this awful experience was this: in an effort to save some money, I sought professional advice at a Big Box store and got what I was paying for- substandard advice, substandard product and my one desire unmet. Will I ever go back for a similar project? Plain and simple: NO. Bigger Is Not Always Better.
